Munra Point Trail: Columbia River Gorge

This airy perch is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the western part of the Columbia River Gorge. The point is a narrow, bald-topped ridge with a distinctive pointed peak that tops out at 1,740 feet in elevation. It’s a hike for the truly adventurous.

The Munra Point Trail is a 5.7-mile out and back trail located near Cascade Locks, and it’s a challenging hike. The trail is not maintained, and can be more of a scramble than a walk up. It also has multiple switchbacks and braids on the ascent. To reach the summit one must climb up a steep chimney of rock that leads to the summit ridge. From there, walk the exposed ridge up to the top, where you will be rewarded with magnificent, 360-degree views.

Please note that the trail has its hazards – poison oak at the bottom, and dangerous drops along the top. Avoid when slippery and wet, and be confident about your hiking skills before heading to the top. But it also rewards with stunning views and a bounty of wildflowers in the warmer months.

Directions:

Drive to the Bonneville Dam exit 40 on Interstate 84. Park at the bottom of the exit, the Tooth Rock trailhead or the small parking lot for Wahclella Falls. From there, use the bridge to cross Tanner Creek, then head into the woods on the well-marked Gorge Trail 400. Walk west 1.3 miles and watch for an unsigned path leading south into the forest.
