Flag Point Lookout: Mt. Hood National Forest

Pick a camping spot with a view by spending a night at Flag Point Lookout, a fire lookout that stands on a 5,650-foot tree-covered butte in the Mt. Hood National Forest. The lookout was constructed in 1924 as a tiny 6-by-6 foot cabin, but has since been renovated to its current dimensions of 14-by-14 feet, surrounded by a wooden catwalk. While historically this spot was used as a fire lookout, today it’s a prized camping spot for those who want a terrific view of the mountains.

At its elevation the lookout gives visitors a great view of the Cascade Range – Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams, Mt. Jefferson, and even the Three Sisters. The sweeping views take a little work to get to, however; expect to traverse 11 miles from the Billy Bob Sno-Park to reach the lookout. It’s advised that travelers use skis, snowshoes, or snowmobiles, as the trek by foot takes roughly eight hours.

The lookout can be reserved for $50 per night, but it often books up well in advance, so plan ahead. The cabin is equipped with a wood shed and stove, as well as a bed that can sleep two people. Also provided are a propane light, a propane stove, and cookware.
