Paddle Scappoose Bay

Head into a watery wilderness at Scappoose Bay, a location known throughout the state as one of the best places to paddleboard, kayak and canoe

There are over 85,000-acre of protected tidal estuary to explore. Check out the islands, sloughs, little ponds, inlets and maze of water channels through this vibrant floodplain. You’ll be sure to see a great array of amphibians, beavers, water birds and turtles. Fish make their home here too, so look down to say hello to coho, chinook, and steelhead as they swim by.

The flat water and absence of powerboats help make the trip relaxing for paddle boarders. If you’re new to the area (or to wandering waterways) check out Scappoose Bay Kayaking. They offer guided tours, including one in the evening which is known for its picturesque beauty.

If you’re paddling solo, please remember to pick up a waterproof map at the rental center – it’s easy to get lost in the tangle of small creeks. For safety’s sake, also check the tidal tables before casting off to make sure you won’t be left stranded if the water levels shift suddenly. And a water bottle is always a good idea.
