Tamanawas Falls is a favorite destination all summer long and into late October for good reason. The entire hike follows along Cold Spring Creek giving you beautiful views the entire way. You'll only have to hike in about a mile and a half over a couple bridges and some rocky terrain before you reach the stunning view of the large falls, with a dry amphitheater cave as the backdrop. Before you turn back around you can attempt to climb behind the falls by scaling some rocks. It can get pretty slippery up by the falls, but if you're careful this makes an excellent place to sit and eat your lunch too.
In the summer months and especially on the weekends this can be a very busy trail, so if you're looking for some solidarity, check it out during the week or after summer's over.
After your hike you can head to Solera Brewery for refreshments and an unbelievable view of Mt. Hood or over to Timberline Lodge (where the shot the movie "The Shining"), both about 20 miles away but worth the trip.
Directions
Take highway 35 approximately 25 miles south of Hood River. The trailhead is a couple of miles or so past the Cooper Spur turnoff on the right. Or, if you get to Sherwood Campground, you’ve gone 1/4 mile too far. It’s hard to miss the large parking area. It’s on the right side of the road and is likely full of cars.
Northwest Forest Pass Required
