Young Mel Brown was classically trained in Portland where he grew up, but later became Oregon’s best known jazz musician. By the 60’s Mel was part of the Motown records family, backing up luminaries such as the Temptations and the Four Tops. He was a working musician who worked with the stars, like Diana Ross with whom he toured for almost ten years. However, Mel never lost his connection to Portland, and it still runs deep. He is largely responsible for nurturing and developing the vibrant Portland jazz scene we all appreciate today.
