If you want the expertise and convenience of a tour, but also the freedom to explore Portland’s attractions, then Gray Line’s Big Pink Sightseeing Hop-On Hop-Off Trolley would be an ideal choice for your Portland trip.
The adorable sightseeing “trolley” (which is actually an open air bus that drives on the road, not on rails) stops at 14 key attractions in Portland. The entire expertly narrated tour is 1 hour and 27 minutes long, if you want to experience it consecutively. But an option that many riders take advantage of – and here’s where the freedom comes in – is that the trolley stops at each attraction on the same minute each hour, which means that you can de-board, enjoy the attraction, and then rejoin the tour when the vehicle swings back around!
Stops include Pioneer Courthouse Square, the South Park Blocks/Cultural District (home of Portland’5 Centers for the Arts, Portland Art Museum and the Oregon Historical Society), Washington Park, the Oregon Zoo, Hoyt Arboretum, Portland Japanese Garden, Nob Hill Shopping District (NW 23rd Avenue), the Pearl District/NW 13th Avenue, Powell’s Books, Lan Su Chinese Garden, Old Town, the Riverplace, Oregon Rail Heritage Center and OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry).
Purchase a One Day Pass ($34.00) or Two Day Pass ($39.00) at the “trolley” office on Pioneer Courthouse Square, then catch the vehicle across the street at the cutaway in front of Nordstrom. The Hop-On Hop-Off Trolley departs from Pioneer Courthouse Square at 9:00 am (July and August) or 10:00 am (the remainder of the season, which runs from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend). The last departure leaves at 4:00 pm, arriving back at Pioneer Courthouse Square at 5:27 pm.
Big Pink Sightseeing Hop-On Hop-Off Trolley is donating $1.00 for every adult ticket to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Check out Gray Line of Portland’s web site for information about other tours, including the Multnomah Falls and Columbia River Tour, the Columbia Gorge Explorer Shuttle and tours of Salem area attractions, such as Silver Falls and The Oregon Garden, a Winery Tour of Oregon’s Willamette Valley and the Salem Deluxe Combination Tour.
